Joe Nuthin's Guide to Life by Helen Fisher

Joe-Nathan likes the two parts of his name separate, just like dinner and dessert. Mean Charlie at work sometimes calls him Joe-Nuthin. But Joe is far from nothing. Joe is a good friend, good at his job, good at making things and at following rules, and he is learning how to do lots of things by himself.

Joe’s mother knows there are a million things he isn’t yet prepared for. While she helps to guide him every day, she is also writing notebooks of advice for Joe, of all the things she hasn’t yet told him about life and things he might forget.

By following her advice, Joe’s life is about to be more of a surprise than he expects. Because he’s about to learn that remarkable things can happen when you leave your comfort zone, and that you can do even the hardest things with a little help from your friends.

Review:

I picked up this book right when I needed it. I had read several fairly heavy books before this, and Joe’s story was exactly what I needed to cleanse the palette and reset my emotions. This heartwarming and uplifting story celebrates the power of friendship, community, and being true to oneself. Through the eyes of Joe, a neurodivergent young man, readers are taken on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

23-year-old Joe-Nathan lives a happily structured life with his mother. During the day, he works at a local hardware store, and in the evenings, he enjoys having dinner and watching an episode or two of “Friends” before bed. On Friday nights, he and his mother go to the local pub, where he greets every patron with a handshake. On Saturdays, they have takeout. Structure makes Joe comfortable, and throwing him off his game is difficult if the structures stay in place. Even the bullies at work don’t get to Joe, so long as they are consistent.

When an unexpected tragedy leaves Joe alone in the world, the only thing he has to rely on is a book that his mother put together of little how-tos and other life lessons. Together with his mother’s wisdom and the help of those who genuinely care about him, Joe will learn to find a new place in the world. He might even make some new friends and teach people a thing or two about what it means to really live. Through interactions with a colorful cast of characters, including his coworkers at the store where he works and a troubled friend in need, Joe discovers that true strength lies in honesty and compassion.

The novel is both heartwarming and thought-provoking, exploring themes of acceptance, friendship, and the power of human connection. The supporting characters are all wonderfully drawn and helped make the book shine. I absolutely loved Chloe and Joe’s friendship, and the side story between Hugo (Joe’s boss) and Joe’s coworker Pip was sweet. Even the connection Joe had with “mean Charlie” was deeply nuanced and one of the most touching parts of the book.

One of this story’s most beautiful elements is how the author crafted a sense of familiarity and comfort around Joe’s character. I adored him, and I loved the uncomplicated way he viewed the world and those around him. Fisher does a beautiful job of depicting neurodiversity and individuality without diminishing Joe’s struggles. Joe’s journey is one of triumph and growth but also marked by moments of doubt and uncertainty. Fisher handles these complexities with sensitivity and honesty, creating a powerful narrative that resonates with readers on a deeply emotional level. Joe’s relatability and endearing nature make readers cheer for him from the opening pages. His unwavering determination to navigate life’s complexities, guided by his mother’s helpful words, is both inspiring and heartwarming. I think we all could learn a thing or twelve from Joe.

Helen Fisher’s storytelling is a masterclass in evoking emotions, offering a beacon of hope and inspiration to those who have ever felt like they didn’t quite fit in. This is a book that not only celebrates the power of kindness, resilience, and the beauty of embracing your true self but also leaves a lasting imprint on your heart. If you’re in need of a feel-good read that will leave you with a renewed sense of hope and optimism, then this book is the perfect choice.
