The Falcon & The Foe by A.J. Truman

Two single dads. One huge grudge. And one tiny tent.

It’s hard enough balancing two jobs with raising my son solo. Forget dating. I barely have time for laundry.

But when my son’s scouting troop The Falcons needed a co-scout leader, I couldn’t say no. There’s just one ginormous problem: the other scout leader Russ.

To all other parents, he’s #DadGoals, Mr. Sexy Widower who lords over the drop off line.

To me? He’s the bane of my picket-fenced existence – stuck up, anal (not in the fun way), and definitely the person who got me booted from the Parent Teacher Association. I can’t let him wrest control of The Falcons and have history repeat itself – no matter how hot he looks in his khaki uniform.

Thing is, the more we work together, the more I glimpse the caring man lurking under the cold exterior. Maybe he isn’t the completely wretched human being I thought.

We’d both sworn off romance to focus on fatherhood, and nothing’s going to change that, not even sharing a too-small tent in the wilderness.

Right?

Review:

Well, hello there, funny, romantic comedy aimed at middle-aged gay men who aren’t gym bunnies or botox-filled mean girl wannabes. I see you! I’d seen a few of my gays on Bookstagram post about this book and decided to check it out. I was in the mood for something light and fun, and I was not at all disappointed. I loved reading about these two forty-something gay single dads who were both relatable and completely lovable. In fact, I loved them and their friends so much that I went ahead and ordered the other three books in the series before I even finished this one.

This book focuses on gay, single fathers Cam and Russ, who are like oil and water – they just don’t mix – like AT ALL. Cam is a single dad juggling two jobs and parenting his son while barely keeping his head above water, while Russ is the seemingly perfect single dad who is always in control. Cam works at a local grocery store while also taking voiceover gigs on the side. He’s not always put together, he is frequently late, and he’s often the butt of many of the PTA mom’s (and Russ’s) jokes. Meanwhile, Russ is wealthy and organized, runs the PTA, and leads the local Falcons (a sort of boy/girl scout group). When Russ’s co-leader of the Falcons resigns, Cal sees this as a way to connect with his son, who desperately wants to join the group. Russ hates the idea of having Cal as his co-leader, and the two clash at every turn, with their competitive banter and petty grudges providing endless entertainment.

As the story progresses, the two continue to clash, but during the annual camping trip, a mishap leaves Cal without a tent, and he and Russ are forced to share. Cue the hilarity and hijinks as they navigate newfound attraction, and skinny dipping – all while trying to resist the undeniable chemistry simmering between them.

What I loved most about this book is that the men were realistic. They weren’t all big arms and washboard abs. Cal is thick and juicy, and Russ takes better care of himself but still rocks a dad bod. I also loved the witty and razor-sharp banter between the men. The author does a fantastic job of balancing humor and heart, creating a story that will have you laughing out loud one moment and swooning the next.

And let’s talk about the romance – because, wow, does it sizzle! The slow-burn enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Cal and Russ is absolutely delicious, with tension so thick you know that these two are going to eventually hook up – even if it’s a simple matter of hate sex. Watching these two stubborn and strong-willed men let down their walls and open up to each other was both satisfying and heartwarming, and the chemistry between them practically jumped off the page. This one is filled with spice that I can get behind!

In the end, I absolutely loved this book. It was nice to see normal, middle-aged gay men represented for once. The book is light, it’s fun, and it’s filled with a lot of heart and steamy man-on-man sex. I absolutely adored these characters and how they found their way into each other’s arms. I can’t wait to read about the other men in their friend group! If you’re a gay man of a certain age, I highly recommend checking out this series. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
