The Ghosts of Gwendolyn Montgomery
In a fast-paced, sexy, ghostly adventure, a publicist at the top of her game must confront her secret mystical past.
To be a client of Gwendolyn Montgomery’s—New York’s most powerful publicist at Sublime Creative—is to be infused with a certain oomph, a mysterious glamour. She seems to have created the ideal life with her handsome new boyfriend, the perfect match. But Gwendolyn has a legion of long-buried secrets that could unravel everything.
After a grisly, bizarre incident at the Brooklyn Museum, Gwendolyn begins to realize that something nefarious is happening tied directly to her past, right as Fonsi Harewood comes back into her world. Fonsi is a queer Latinx psychic from the South Bronx who’s caught up in a love triangle with a ghost and his mortal ex. He’s able to communicate with the dead, and he comes with a dire warning for Gwendolyn that the barrier between humans and spirits is weakening.
Gwendolyn would prefer not to have anything to do with ghostly drama. Yet in order to get to the bottom of the spookiness derailing her life and threatening the world, she must face the demons she’d long left behind. The Ghosts of Gwendolyn Montgomery is a sensuous, funny, mystical adventure that will leave you spellbound as you keep the pages turning.
My thoughts:
I received a #free copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts are my own.
I’m always down for a good urban fantasy. Especially one that mixes witchcraft, ghosts, and just the right amount of weird. So when I read the synopsis of this book after receiving a gifted copy, I had a feeling it would be right up my alley. It was.
The story follows Gwendolyn Montgomery, a high-powered New York publicist with a very curated life (and some seriously buried secrets), and Fonsi Harewood, a queer psychic from the South Bronx who’s dealing with an ex who can’t let go and a love affair with a ghost. (Yes, you read that right. And yes, it works.) I really liked how the book alternates between both POVs. Each voice felt distinct, and their personal storylines were compelling on their own, but watching them gradually come together was what kept me flipping pages.
What I really appreciated about this one is that it is fast-paced and the author leans into the mystical without getting bogged down by overcomplicated world-building. It knows what it is: a fast, engaging urban fantasy with heart, humor, and just enough spookiness to keep things interesting. There’s a Brooklyn Museum scene early on that sets the tone beautifully, and it builds steadily from there. It’s creepy, stylish, and totally cinematic.
Not only is the story compelling but a reveal toward the end took me completely by surprise. It gave the whole story an extra jolt of energy right when I thought I had a handle on things. It’s always a nice surprise when a book catches you off guard in a good way.
Overall, I had a blast with this book. It hit that urban fantasy sweet spot I’m always chasing, and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more from this author. At just under 300 pages, this is the kind of story you can tear through in a single sitting, which is exactly what I did. It’s got that bingeable quality that makes it a great weekend read. If you’re into paranormal fiction that’s fun, exciting, sexy and has a touch of darkness, strong character dynamics and some solid surprises, this one’s worth adding to your TBR.
