his Spells Love by Kate Robb

A young woman tries to heal her heartbreak by casting a spell to erase her ex from her past, but she wakes up in an alternate reality where she’s lost more than she wished for in this witty, whimsical friends-to-lovers debut.

What if one little wish changed everything?

When Gemma gets dumped by her long-term boyfriend, she reacts the way any reasonable twenty-eight-year-old would: by getting drunk with her sister, kooky aunt, and best friend, Dax. After one too many margaritas, they decide to perform a love- cleansing spell, which promises to erase Gemma’s ex from her memory. They follow all the instructions, including a platonic kiss from Dax to seal the deal.

When Gemma wakes up, she realizes that this silly spell has worked. Not only does it seem that she never dated her ex, but the rest of her life is completely unrecognizable. The worst part: Dax has no idea who she is.

To reverse the spell and get back to her old life, Gemma must convince her once-best-friend-now-near-stranger to kiss her. But as she carries out her plans, she finds herself falling for him—hard. Soon, Gemma begins to wonder whether she even wants to go back to the way things once were. What if Dax was The One all along?

Review:

This book was a fun and witty friends-to-lovers rom-com that explores the power of love and the consequences of magic gone awry. I really enjoyed it and found myself laughing out loud several times. Gemma is a hot mess, and her sister Kiersten is hilarious, and Dax? Hello Dax! I want one of you, please. After the first chapter, I was instantly drawn into Gemma’s story and eager to see how her love life would be turned upside down.

The novel starts off with a relatable situation – getting dumped by a long-term boyfriend. Gemma dated Stuart for four years and felt certain that he was her forever boo – even if he was kind of bland and uninteresting, at least he was safe and predictable. At the top of the novel, Emma is still dealing with heartache a few weeks post-breakup, and her reaction to said breakup is drowning her sorrows with margaritas (something many of us can relate to). It’s while slightly inebriated that Kate’s eccentric aunt Livi, Kiersten, and Gemma’s best friend Dax encourage Gemma to perform a love spell to cut all emotional ties with Stuart, and this is when things quickly take a magical turn.

When Gemma wakes up the next morning, she finds herself in unfamiliar territory. Her living situation has changed as has her job and her friendship with Dax is non-existent. Now Gemma has to convince Livi and Kiersten that she is living in an alternate reality and she’s not sure she likes it. All they need to do is recreate the spell, but it will be another month before that can happen because they have to wait for a certain moon phase. Now, Gemma is stuck in this alternate timeline, and as the days pass, she finds herself reconnecting with Dax in ways they had never connected in her other reality. Maybe this timeline is actually better – does Gemma even want to go back?

As I mentioned earlier, the book wouldn’t be as enjoyable if it weren’t for the addictive characters. Gemma, with her quirky personality and endearing flaws, is a protagonist I couldn’t help but root for. Her journey of self-discovery and navigating her complicated feelings for Dax kept me hooked throughout the book. Similarly, Dax is a fascinating character with a depth that is gradually revealed. Their chemistry is electric, and I loved seeing their relationship evolve from friends to something more.

The friends-to-lovers trope isn’t exactly new and can be hit or miss for me, but it definitely worked here. I enjoyed watching Gemma reconnect with Dax and seeing their friendship grow stronger as they faced numerous challenges in their quest to reverse the spell. The details of this new world were imaginative and well-thought-out, making it easy to suspend disbelief and get lost in the story.

This was a super fun book and a really quick read – I read it in roughly four hours. The well-developed characters and the sweet romance kept me invested in the story until the very end. Robb’s writing style is engaging, and I appreciated the quirky humor and breezy style. For fans of contemporary romance with a touch of magic, this book is worth a read.
