Who knew all I needed to fully invest in a romance was to make both main characters dark and twisty. I’d heard nothing but great things about this one going in, and I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive at first, but I fell hard for these characters and this plot almost immediately. And yes, I’m going to say it, I was completely fine with the spice. Apparently horny serial killers works for me. (I think I need to unpack this in therapy.)

Harper has spent years quietly keeping her small seaside town exactly the way she likes it, and part of that means dealing with problem tourists in her own special way, hiding the body parts in her garden. And it’ done wonders for her plant growth! Nolan shows up in town carrying his own violent agenda. Every year on the anniversary of an accident that destroyed his life, he hunts down and kills someone connected to it, and this year Harper is the name at the top of his list. The problem is Harper isn’t the easy target he expected. She fights back, and fights back hard, and the two of them end up locked in a standoff that is fueled by an intense attraction for each other. When an amateur true crime investigator arrives in town chasing rumors of a long buried serial killer, Harper and Nolan are forced into an uneasy alliance to protect their secrets from getting out.

This book moved fast, and I found myself rooting hard for two characters I probably shouldn’t have been rooting for. I spent the entire read questioning my own morals, and loving it the entire time. By the time I closed it, I felt completely entertained and emotionally satisfied, while also side eyeing myself a little for how invested I got in two people who are, by any normal measure, deeply messed up.

The pacing here is relentless. There’s never a dull stretch, and the tension between Harper and Nolan builds constantly, whether that’s the danger of their situation or the increasingly complicated feelings neither of them wants to admit they have. The dynamic between them carries the whole book, and it never once felt like it was coasting on shock value alone. The characters actually have depth underneath all the danger, which is what made rooting for them feel natural.

I immediately bought book two after finishing this, preordered book three, and I’m already planning to check out this author’s other series. If you’re into morally gray romance, some genuinely twisted characters, and enough spice to keep the temperature elevated, this is exactly what you’re looking for. Wildly entertaining from start to finish and precisely what I needed. Who knew?
